Staying safe on a motorcycle this spring

On Behalf of | Mar 31, 2025 | PERSONAL INJURY (PLAINTIFF) - Car Accidents |

As spring arrives in earnest in Washington State, many motorcyclists are eager to get back on the road and enjoy the warmer weather. However, with increased riding comes increased risk, especially after a long winter when both riders and other drivers may be out of practice.

Staying safe on a motorcycle this spring requires preparation, awareness and defensive riding techniques to reduce the chances of a serious accident.

Being prepared and staying focused

If you ride, it’s time to get prepared for the spring. First, make sure your motorcycle is in good working condition. If it’s been in storage over the winter, take time to inspect the tires for wear and proper pressure, check fluid levels, test your lights and brakes and ensure that your battery is fully charged. A spring tune-up at a qualified shop can help catch any issues before you hit the road.

Wearing proper safety gear is also going to be important. In Washington, all riders are required to wear helmets that meet U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) standards, but a helmet alone isn’t enough. Protective jackets, gloves, pants and boots can greatly reduce the severity of injuries in the event of a crash. Bright or reflective clothing can also make you more visible to other drivers. That is especially important during spring months when sunlight glare and rain showers – which can contribute to increased crash risk – are common.

Watch out for distracted or inattentive drivers. Many drivers are not used to seeing motorcycles on the road after winter and may fail to check blind spots or yield properly. Ride defensively, avoid lingering in a car’s blind spot and use your headlights — even during the day — to increase your visibility.

Staying alert, prepared and cautious this spring can help ensure that your rides are enjoyable and as safe as they can be. If you’re injured by a negligent or reckless driver, however, it’s important to understand your right to compensation to cover medical bills and other expenses and damages.
