2 factors that contribute to drunk driving

On Behalf of | Nov 27, 2025 | PERSONAL INJURY (PLAINTIFF) - Car Accidents |

Driving while under the influence of alcohol or other drugs is one of the most dangerous behaviors. However, some people do it. So, why would someone get behind the wheel after drinking when they are aware of the dangers of doing so?

Here are two factors that contribute to drunk driving:

Overconfidence

Many drivers believe they can drink, even beyond the legal limit, and still drive. Many of them have done it before and, consequently, feel confident doing it again.

Studies have shown that confidence can be subjective when it comes to drunk driving. Some people claim they feel fine driving after one drink, while others say they can drive after five drinks. The type of drink also plays a role in boosting confidence. Most drivers say they are more comfortable driving after drinking beer as opposed to wine or liquor.

Moreover, passengers driven by drunk drivers have stated they accept those rides because they know the driver, and that the driver is usually fine.

Alcohol gives a false sense of confidence. One is more likely to believe their ability to drive is better than it actually is. This can lead to costly mistakes on the road.

Peer pressure

A significant percentage of younger drivers drive while intoxicated because of social reasons. They feel peer pressure to do so because their friends usually drive after drinking. Or they are chosen to drive because they are the least drunk. Some people even feel embarrassed to admit they are too drunk to drive because they don’t want to be seen as someone who can’t hold their liquor.

Different factors lead to people drinking and driving, with overconfidence and peer pressure being leading ones. If a drunk driver injures you, it’s important to understand your options to hold them responsible for their actions.
